The Globally Harmonized System, GHS, aims to set a common set of standards to classify substances and mixtures in accordance with their health and environmental hazard. This is highly beneficial for import/export of goods because information is provided in such a manner that it can be understood by many international authorities.

These rules include, amongst other items, classification of substances, requirements on Safety Data Sheet (SDS) elaboration, labelling and information on proper handling of the chemical products.

Given the wide variety of already existing regulations, each country or region has its own implementation plan, which can lead to slightly different requirements (i.e.: REACH and CLP in the European Union).
